I just had a thought….is this business of selling my old, non-expired test strips legal? I suppose the question is “who owns the strips?” If they were given to me as part of the deal between my insurer and my care provider, then surely I own them just like I own any medications provided this way. I pay the insurance premiums after all.

Does anyone have any idea about the legality of this? It all seems a bit gray market, but if the strips are going to expire worthless isn’t about time people started usefully using them? I know, too many questions but I’d hate to point someone in the direction of realizing money from their old test strips only to find myself in jail beside them.

My name is Sara and I’m a TYPE 2 diabetic who recently made a hundred bucks selling old blood glucose test strips I was never going to use because my insurance group had just sent me a new type of test meter that couldn’t use the old strips.  Efficient health care huh?

Anyway, I came across a web site that bought spare strips from fully insured diabetics like me and sold them on (they said recycled) to uninsured diabetics for a fraction of the cost on the retail market. Now I certainly didn’t make a fortune, but the fact I was able to take my kids out a couple of times last month AND I helped someone test their blood sugar more frequently certainly had me smiling for a while! If you’re diabetic and have a mountain of spare strips, you can click on the recycle image below to convert them into cash.
